Herts Aquatics offers a wide range of aquarium heaters. When selecting a new heater there are two basic types, hang-over-the-top and fully submersible.
Hang-over-the-tank heaters are clamped to the tank wall with the bottom part in the water.
Submersible heaters are sealed to prevent water from seeping into the unit, they are placed totally under the water and attached to the side of the tank using suction cups.
Never operate a heater out of water as this can lead to damage to the unit. All aquariums should have a thermometer for monitoring temperature even if your heater has a thermostat. A plastic heater guard will help protect your fish, plants or invertebrates from heater injury. Locate the heater close to an area of high circulation so that heated water can be rapidly and evenly distributed throughout the tank. This is usually near the filter system, the filter input from an external filter, or the airstones. The fully submersible heater should be placed at the bottom of the tank so that heating convection can be optimized.
